Privacy
This page describes what The New American Century collects, what it does not, and how subscriber email addresses are used.
Summary
- The site sets no cookies.
- No accounts, ad networks, cross-site trackers, or reader profiles.
- Analytics are anonymous and run on this site’s own server; visitor IP addresses are not stored.
- Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control are honored: when either signal is set, no analytics run.
- Fonts, stylesheets, scripts, and analytics are served from this site’s own domain.
- Subscriber email addresses are used only to send the newsletter.
Analytics
Analytics run on GoatCounter, open-source software installed on the same server that runs this site. The data never leaves that server — it is not sent to GoatCounter or any other company. The script that counts visits is served from this site’s own domain, so no outside analytics service is contacted.
Analytics record two things: that a page was viewed, and the referrer — the link followed to reach it, if any.
The following are not collected:
- IP address. Each visitor’s IP is combined with a rotating secret to count one anonymous visit per day, then discarded. Because the secret rotates, a visitor cannot be linked from one day to the next.
- Browser or operating system.
- Location or country.
- Language or screen size.
- Cookies or identifiers of any kind.
Counts are retained for a limited period and then deleted automatically.
When a browser sends the Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signal, the analytics script is not loaded at all.
Email addresses
A subscriber’s email address is used only to send the newsletter. It is:
- Never sold, rented, or shared.
- Not used for advertising, profiling, or open- or click-tracking.
- Unsubscribed at any time using the link in every email, which stops all further mail.
The newsletter is sent roughly every other week: a new essay and a recap of the notes since the previous one.
Addresses are stored with Resend, the service used to send the newsletter, and are used only to deliver it. Unsubscribing stops all mail immediately; the address is then kept on Resend’s suppression list so the newsletter is never sent to it again, and is used for nothing else.
The RSS feed provides the same content without an email address.
Fonts and site assets
Fonts, stylesheets, and scripts are served from this site’s own domain. No external font service, such as Google Fonts, is contacted. The typefaces are IBM Plex, under the SIL Open Font License, and Satoshi, under the Fontshare free font license.
Embedded media
Some essays include images or video embedded from external services, such as an image host or YouTube. Loading an essay that contains such media contacts those services, which can see the request. The site sets no cookies in the process.
